What is Ma bu Stance?

Ma bu Stance

Ma bu stance is a basic and important movement in kung fu traning . It not only plays a key role in Wushu routines, but also plays an important role in improving the practitioner’s body coordination, strength and stability. The Horse Stance is a basic stance position that enhances the stability of the lower body by stably distributing the center of gravity between the legs.

There are several types of Ma bu stance:

  1. High Horse Stance: both feet are open, usually shoulder-width or slightly wider, knees are bent, thighs are parallel to the ground, the center of gravity of the body is lowered, and the back is straight.
  2. Low Horse Stance: similar to the High Horse Stance, but with a greater degree of knee bending, thighs close to the calves, lower center of gravity, and higher requirements for leg strength and stability.
  3. Half Horse Stance: One foot in front of the other, the forefoot on the ground, the hind foot full foot on the ground, the center of gravity of the body is distributed in between the two legs, this posture is mostly used for transition or preparatory movements.
  4. Lunge Stance: the two feet are separated from each other, the front leg is bent and the back leg is straight, the center of gravity is shifted forward, similar to the posture of an arrow on the string.
  5. Independent Horse Stance: one foot stands, the other foot is raised, the knee is bent and the body is balanced, this posture requires a very high level of balance.
  6. Parallel Horse Stance: stand with both feet open parallel to each other, slightly wider than shoulder width, knees slightly bent, body weight sinking.

Each type of horse stance has its own specific training purpose and technical application. Practitioners choose the appropriate horse stance to practice according to different martial arts schools and individual training needs.

How do i work on the stability of my horse’s gaits stance?

Improving the stability of the horse gait takes time and patience, here are some practical methods and steps:

  1. Basic Strength Training: Strengthening the legs and core muscles is the foundation for improving the stability of the horse stance. You can strengthen your legs through strength training such as deep squats, leg lifts and hard pulls.
  2. Correct Posture: Make sure the posture of the horse stance is correct. Both feet should be parallel or slightly inward, knees aligned with the toes, hips down, back straight, chest out, and jaw slightly closed.
  3. Gradually increase the practice time: You can practice for a short time at the beginning, for example, 30 seconds to 1 minute each time, and gradually increase the practice time as your leg strength and endurance improve.
  4. Balance training: You can improve your body’s balance by standing on one foot, using a balance ball, and other exercises, which will help you stay stable in the horse stance.
  5. Intentional Focus: When practicing horse stance, focus your attention on your body’s center of gravity by imagining that your center of gravity is sunken and solidly located between your feet.
  6. Breath Control: During horse stance practice, maintain deep, long breaths and do not hold your breath. Breathing can help relax the body and improve stability.
  7. Core Stability: Strengthening the core muscles, such as planks and sit-ups, can help stabilize the entire body.
  8. Periodic checking and adjustment: In the course of practice, regularly check your posture for distortion and make adjustments when necessary.
  9. Use of aids: In the early stages, you can use walls or other supports to help maintain balance, and gradually reduce your reliance on aids as your stability improves.
  10. Reflection and Correction: After practicing, reflect on your performance, identify the reasons for instability, and make corrections in the next exercise.
  11. Consistency: Stability takes a long time to improve with practice, so it is very important to practice consistently.
  12. Professional Guidance: If possible, seek the guidance of a professional martial arts instructor who can provide expert advice and correct faulty postures.

What are the common mistakes when practicing horse steps?

There are some common mistakes that beginners and some less experienced practitioners may make when practicing horse stance. Here are some mistakes to watch out for:

  1. Knees over toes: this can lead to excessive pressure on the knees and increase the risk of injury.
  2. Bent back: the back should be kept straight and any bending may lead to incorrect posture and affect breathing and power transfer.
  3. Excessive center of gravity: If the center of gravity of the body is not lowered, the stability of the horse stance will be greatly diminished.
  4. Improper distance between feet: The distance between feet is either too narrow or too wide, both of which will affect the effectiveness of the horse stance. The correct distance should allow the practitioner to feel stable and comfortable.
  5. Hip Lift: The hips should be lowered to the same level as the knees. If the hips are raised, the center of gravity of the body will be unstable.
  6. Improper Head Position: The head should be straight with the eyes looking straight ahead. If the head is tilted forward or backward, it will affect the balance of the whole body.
  7. Uneven Breathing: When practicing horse stance, one should maintain deep, long and even breathing. If you breathe rapidly or hold your breath, it will lead to tension and discomfort in the body.
  8. Misplaced Arms: Arms should be relaxed at the sides of the body or in a specific position, not stiff or improperly positioned.
  9. Over-exertion: When practicing horse stance, one should keep the whole body relaxed, especially the leg muscles. Over-exertion can lead to muscle tension and fatigue.
  10. Neglecting foot posture: The feet should be flat against the ground with the toes gripping the ground slightly to increase stability. If the foot posture is incorrect, it will affect the stability of the entire horse stance.

In order to avoid these mistakes, practitioners should seek the guidance of a professional instructor when practicing horse stance and practice in front of a mirror in order to observe and adjust their posture. Through continuous practice and correction, one can gradually master the correct posture of the horse stance.
